Antisemitism, Racism, Hate

I have explored issues of antisemitism, racism and hate throughout my career. Since the 1990s, my work on extreme metal music and culture has confronted the aesthetic possibilities of hate as part of a wider preoccupation with ‘transgression’. It has also forced me to grapple with the racism and antisemitism that can sometimes be found in metal.

More recently, the increasing prominence of antisemitism as a live political issue in the UK and globally has pushed me to explore how Jewish communities experience hatred against them. In particular, I have looked at how what I call ‘selective anti/semitism’ divides Jewish communities through separating out ‘good’ and ‘bad’ Jews.
