Review: ‘Israel: A History in 100 Cartoons’ by Colin Shindler

Theme: Israel/Palestine
Category: Book reviews
For many years I have been grappling, as a Jew, a writer and a sociologist, with Israel – what it is, what it should be and how it impacts on those outside the country itself. I call this theme ‘Israel/Palestine’ both to emphasise the fractious entanglement between the country/proto-country, and also to acknowledge that a large part of my work is actually about the consequences of this entanglement.
This themed collection includes my work on Israeli metal, my work on divisions over Israel and Zionism in Diaspora Jewish communities, as well as my work on how the Israel/Palestine entanglement plays out across the world.

Many voices warn that Israelās occupation of Palestinian territories is corroding the countryās democracy. Now, a worrying onslaught by Israelās right-wing government on domestic dissenters raises further concerns. But the two issues are distinct as well as linked, say Keith Kahn-Harris & Joel Schalit: for the challenges to Israelās democracy also have deep internal roots that must be identified if they are to be overcome.
